Slumdog Millionaire

Thu Jan 15, 2009, 3:20 PM
Director Danny Boyle, with his most recent film "Slumdog Millionaire" (2008), has established himself as a multifaceted filmmaker, capable of telling stories in a wide number of genres. "Trainspotting" (1996) takes you on a drug-infused trip and placing himself among the group of new directors, along with David Fincher (Seven, Fight Club, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button) and Sam Mendes (American Beauty, Revolutionary Road). However, Boyle reached out towards other genres of film as his career evolved with both success stories and downfalls. "The Beach", featuring Leonardo DiCaprio, was a box-office flop where Danny Boyle publicly accepted responsibility for DiCaprio's appearance in the film, due to bad direction. Yet, flops did not stop Boyle from making the films and telling the stories he wanted to. Two years later he introduced the world to a new world of zombies in "28 Days Later..." (2002) where they can run, jump, and hoist extreme aggression. Boyle was back, delving into the suspense/horror genre with a low budget, but high-quality film.

Thereafter, he made the religious/moral story of "Millions" (2004) where two young brothers who have lost their mother stumble across a duffle-bag stuffed with cash; and, while the elder brother utilizes the money for his own benefit, the younger, more naive brother explores what it means to be "poor", giving his money away in good charity, all the while having visions of religious figures who guide him. Already, we have a drug experience, a religious quest, and a zombie blood-fest, but Boyle did not stop there. Next, he reached into outer space with the cinematically beautiful "Sunshine" (2007) where a crew is sent to the dying Sun with a mega-bomb in order to recharge it and save humanity, however, on the way human fallibility takes over and things begin to spiral downwards. While the film was not accepted in the public eye and lost over $40 million for the company, Boyle remained true to his filmmaking and propelled himself into the spot light, sweeping the 2009 Golden Globes with his most recent film "Slumdog Millionaire" the story of an impoverished Indian boy from the slums of Mumbai who partakes in the Hindi "Who Wants To Be A Millionaire" and wins, all for his life-long love. The story is inter-cut between the boy's upbringing in the slums, his experience on the game show, and his arrest, where the police question him for cheating. While no big names occupy the screen, the film feels authentic, and Danny Boyle has once again conquered a new genre in a foreign country, in a foreign language, establishing himself as one of the finest filmmakers of our time.
